Why Industrial Fan Motors Overload and How to Prevent It

An industrial fan motor may trip repeatedly, run hotter than expected or draw current above its rated value. These symptoms should not be solved by simply resetting the overload protection. An industrial fan motor overload usually indicates an electrical, mechanical or airflow-system problem that should be identified before the fan returns to continuous operation.

Common Causes of Industrial Fan Motor Overload
Electrical problems may include incorrect supply voltage, phase imbalance, loose terminals or unsuitable protection settings. Mechanical resistance can also increase when bearings deteriorate, the shaft becomes difficult to rotate, the impeller rubs against the casing or material accumulates on rotating components. These conditions force the motor to produce more torque and may raise operating current and temperature.
How the Ventilation System Affects Motor Load
The motor load is also connected to the actual fan operating point. Changes to filters, dampers, duct dimensions or outlet arrangements can move the fan away from its intended airflow and pressure conditions. The effect depends on the fan type and performance curve, so closing or opening a damper should not automatically be treated as a universal solution.
